What is sustainable swimwear made of?
Almost all swimwear is made of polyester, or plastic. This is because of the properties of polyester: it dries quickly and is elastic. A bikini made of cotton, for example, would quickly become lumpy and fall off your bottom. In the year 2018, 359 million tons of polyester were produced worldwide and in Europe alone, some 62 million tons of plastic were made in that year. These are huge quantities and these numbers are increasing every year. So it's high time to reduce the production of plastic and invest in the alternative: reuse existing plastic!
Sustainable bikinis and swimming costumes from rPET
Sustainable swimwear is daarom vaak gemaakt van rPET: polyester gemaakt van gerecyclede PET-flessen. Eén van de hele mooie dingen aan het gebruik van rPET is dat hiervoor geen aardolie gewonnen hoeft te worden terwijl dit voor het produceren van nieuw plastic wel nodig is. Daarnaast wordt er bij de productie van rPET 59% minder energie verbruikt, wordt er 32% minder Co2 uitgestoten en is er een minder water nodig.
